Container home offices and studios

A backyard office, art studio or music room puts real distance between the workday and the house.

Best fit: 20′ High Cube · One Trip · Modified

Working from home is easier when work has its own door. A modified container in the backyard gives you a quiet, separate room for an office, studio or practice space without an addition to the house.

With a man door, a window, insulation, power and finish-out, a high cube becomes a room that feels like part of the property, locks at the end of the day and stays comfortable through Reno’s hot summers and cold winters.

What a container office can include

Most backyard offices and studios share a core set of modifications:

  • $
Man door. A glass or solid entry door for daily use.
  • $
Windows. Natural light and a view, placed to avoid glare on screens.
  • $
Insulation. For comfort year round and to help with sound.
  • $
Power and lighting. Outlets for equipment, lighting and heating or cooling.
  • $
Interior finish-out. Walls, flooring, shelving and a desk.

Planning the room

Think about how you will use the space. A video-call office needs good light on your face and a quiet wall behind you. An art studio wants steady north light. A music room needs extra insulation to keep sound in.

An office with power is usually treated as a structure by the county or city, so check with your local building department before you order and share the plan with us.

Which container fits an office or studio

A 20 ft high cube in one trip condition is the most popular choice. It gives about 160 square feet of floor, enough for a desk, shelves and a reading chair, and the extra foot of height makes the room feel open.

Two-person offices or studios with large equipment can move up to a 40 ft high cube.

Furnish the room before you finish it. Decide where the desk, shelves and equipment will go, then place windows, outlets and lighting around them. A window beside the desk instead of behind it keeps glare off the screen, and outlets at desk height save extension cords. Light colors on the walls make a 20 ft feel larger. A small canopy over the door and a pair of wood steps make the room feel finished from the outside as well as the inside.

Site prep and delivery

A 20 ft container comes off a tilt bed truck, so the driver needs about 60 feet of straight run in front of the spot, 12 feet of clear width through gates and 14 feet of overhead clearance. In a backyard, check gate widths, fences, trees and overhead lines early.

A level gravel or decomposed granite pad, or footings at the corners, works well for an office. Keep the doors facing the house for a short walk, and plan where power will run before the box is set.

Before delivery, decide where power will come from and mark the route for the trench or conduit. Setting the box with the doors and windows facing the right way on day one is far easier than turning a finished room later, and it keeps the walk from the house short and dry.

Common questions

Can a container office be comfortable in summer and winter?

Yes, with good insulation and heating and cooling sized for the space. Insulation is one of the most important modifications for a container office in the high desert.

Is a container office quiet?

Insulation and interior finish-out make a container much quieter. For music rooms or recording, plan extra sound treatment.

Do I need a permit for a backyard office?

Often, especially once it has power. Check with your local building department before ordering.
