Container homes and cabins

One trip steel is a clean, square starting shell for a cabin, guest house or full-time home.

Best fit: 40′ High Cube · One Trip · Modified

Container homes appeal to people who want a strong, efficient structure with a clean modern look. For a cabin in the Sierra, a guest house on rural land or a full-time home, a container provides the frame, walls and roof in one piece.

The work is in the plan. Windows, doors, insulation, power and interior finish-out turn a steel shell into a comfortable place to live, and the decisions you make before the first cut determine how well it works.

What goes into a container home

Every container home is a set of modifications to a sound shell. Most projects include:

  • $
Openings. Windows and entry doors, framed to keep the structure strong.
  • $
Insulation. Critical in the Great Basin, where winters are cold and summers are hot.
  • $
Power and systems. Electrical, plumbing and heating planned with your contractor.
  • $
Interior finish-out. Walls, floors and cabinetry that make it feel like home.

Planning, codes and the people you need

A container used as a dwelling is a building, and building codes, zoning and permits apply. Before you order, talk to your county or city building department and, for most projects, an architect or engineer familiar with container construction.

We supply the container and the modifications we build, and we work with your plan. Bring your drawings or your ideas and we will talk through what the shell needs.

Which container fits a home or cabin

A 40 ft high cube in one trip condition is the standard starting point. It gives about 320 square feet of floor in one piece, the extra foot of height makes a real difference in a living space, and one trip steel has the cleanest history and the best surfaces for finish work.

Smaller cabins or guest units can work in a 20 ft high cube, and larger homes combine more than one container.

Plan for the high desert and the mountains from the start. Insulation, window placement for sun and shade, snow shedding on the roof and protection from wind all affect how comfortable a container home is. Your designer will account for these, and we will build openings to match. The more complete your plan is before the container is cut, the smoother the build will go, and the easier it will be for your county to review. Many owners start with a single 40 ft cabin and add a second unit later.

Foundations, site prep and delivery

A 40 ft container comes off a tilt bed truck that needs about 100 feet of straight run in front of the spot, 12 feet of clear width through gates and 14 feet of overhead clearance. Cabin and rural sites often have long, rough driveways, so the route matters as much as the pad.

Container homes usually sit on a concrete foundation or piers designed by your engineer. The container must be level and fully supported so doors, windows and finish work stay square.

Common questions

Do you build container homes?

We supply one trip containers and build modifications such as windows, doors, insulation, power and finish-out to your plan. For a full home, you will also work with a designer and builder for foundations, plumbing and code compliance.

Do I need a permit for a container home?

Yes. A container used as a dwelling is treated as a building. Talk to your local building department before you order.

Why one trip for a container home?

One trip containers have only one ocean crossing behind them, so the steel is clean, the floor is in excellent condition and the surfaces are best for finish work.
