New and used 20 foot
shipping containers.
New and used 20ft shipping containers for sale from our Reno yard. About 160 square feet of lockable, weather tight steel that still fits in a parking space.
The size most people actually need
Of every container that goes out our gate, the 20ft standard leaves most often. It is 20 feet long, 8 feet wide, and 8 feet 6 inches tall on the outside, which means it drops into a single parking space, along a fence line, or in the corner of a side yard without taking over the property. A 40ft holds twice as much, and plenty of lots simply cannot take one. For a homeowner, a rural property, or a crew that needs a lockable job box, the 20ft is the size that solves the problem without creating a second one.

The measurements that decide things
Outside dimensions are easy: 20ft by 8ft by 8ft 6in. Inside, you give back the thickness of the corrugated walls and the floor, so plan on about 19 feet 4 inches of usable length, 7 feet 8 inches of width, and roughly 7 feet 10 inches of clear height. The number that usually settles the question is the door opening at the end, about 7 feet 8 inches wide and 7 feet 6 inches tall. Measure your tallest item before you order. Empty, a 20ft weighs around 5,000 pounds, which is why wind is never a problem and why the ground under it matters more than the steel does.
What fits in a 20ft container
- The contents of a one-bedroom apartment, furniture and boxes and a mattress included, with room left to walk in and reach the back.
- About ten standard 48 by 40 pallets set flat on the floor in two rows, or roughly double that if you can stack them.
- A side-by-side UTV parked nose in, with a workbench and bolted shelving along one wall behind it.
- A full shop and yard kit: riding mower, snowblower, compressor, ladders, a rolling tool chest, and the wheelbarrows.
- Seasonal overflow for a household: holiday bins, camping and ski gear, spare tires, and everything the garage quit holding years ago.
- A contractor’s locked job box: lumber and trim up to about nineteen feet, hand tools, fasteners, and a phase of material at a time.
What does not fit is anything over about seven and a half feet tall at the door opening, or longer than nineteen feet four inches on the floor. If you are close on height, a 40ft high cube gives you another full foot and a taller door. If you are short on room to place it, the 20ft is usually the only answer. Current 20ft stock is on the inventory page, and you are welcome to come walk the rows and pick the exact one.
New one-trip or used
A used 20ft starts at $2,500 plus tax. It has ten to fifteen years of ocean service on it, so it comes with dents, scrapes, patches, and surface rust. What it does not come with is a leak: every one is inspected, the floor is solid, and the doors seal. For storage that lives behind a shop or out on acreage, it is the most secure dry space per dollar we sell. More on grading is on the used containers page.
A new 20ft one-trip starts at $3,950 plus tax. It has crossed the ocean once, loaded, and was sold on arrival, so the paint is factory, the floor is clean, the doors swing with one hand, and it has a lock box welded on. If the container sits in front of a house, faces a street, or belongs to a business that customers see, the difference in appearance is worth the difference in price. Read the full explanation on the new one-trip containers page.

Door options on a 20ft
Most 20ft containers have one set of cargo doors at one end, and that is all most buyers need. If you would rather load from either side of the box instead of digging to the back, a double door 20ft puts cargo doors on both ends and starts at $4,250. A tri-door adds a side door set to one end, which is the answer on a lot where the truck can only set the box one way, and starts at $4,375. A 20ft with a man door and a rooftop vent starts at $3,950 and is the one people pick when they will be walking in and out all day and want air moving in August.
What a 20ft delivery needs from your site
Our own tilt-bed trucks and our own drivers deliver, and the driver sets the container where you want it. As a rule of thumb, a 20ft needs roughly 60 feet of straight, clear, reasonably firm run for the truck to back in, tilt the bed, and slide the box off as it pulls forward. Figure 12 feet of width along that path, gates included, and 14 feet of overhead clearance for limbs and lines. We check access with you before anything is scheduled, and delivery is quoted with the container so there is nothing to discover later.
The one job that is yours is a level base under the four corners. Gravel, decomposed granite, footings, or a slab all work, and an hour of prep is the difference between doors that swing with a finger and doors that bind. The short version is in our site prep guide, and then tell us the size and the address and we will quote the container and the delivery together.
